Neptune open defence with Clare thrashing

ESB Men’s League

Esat Telecom Demons 81(43)   86(39) Frosties Tigers
Tobe Carberry 30 24 Ricardo Leonard
Juan Wiley 18 18 Roscoe Patterson
Brian Clernon 12 16 John Teahan

Robbie Turner

The first match of the 2000/2001 season proved to be a cracker as new team on the block Frosties Tigers came from 14pts down at the end of the 3rd quarter to blast their way past title contenders Demons and grab the first win of the season.

The first quarter was pretty much basket for basket with both sides impressing - it ended 21 apiece. Tobe Carberry lived up to his reputation and played havoc with Tigers defence and putting his side 4pts in front going in at the break It wasn't until the third quarter that Demons began to pull away from the visitors. Robbie Turner started the third quarter on 4 fouls, limiting his participation. Carberry again proved to be the thorn in Tigers paw and his excellent offensive work saw Demons enjoy a 14pt lead, 70-56 going into the final quarter

But Tralee star John Teahan got his side right back in the game with three quick consecutive scores at the start of the fourth quarter. Ricardo Leonard and Michael Quirke both added further baskets to cut the deficit to just 8pts with 4 minutes gone. Roscoe Patterson enjoyed a superb steal on the half way line and finished the move off with a slam-dunk, which killed of Demons. John Teahan - who had a superb fourth quarter - had a steal, drove to the basket - was fouled, fell over three players, but still managed to get the shot off - it dropped, and he grabbed to bonus to level the game at 75-75 with just over 3 minutes remaining. Ricardo put Tigers in front for the first time since the opening minute. John Teahan's man marking of Tobe Carberry kept him scoreless in the fourth quarter, with Vinnie Murphy lending a hand to keep the prolific scorer under wraps. Demons were on the rack by now and fouling to keep in touch, but Robbie Turner hit 9/10 at the line in the run up to put the visitors clear in front. Shane Coughlan and Brian Clernon hit two big three's for the home side to keep them in touch, but Tigers held on for the 5pt victory and the first win of the new season.

Waterford Crystal  81(45)   71(27) Dungannon
Stacey Massiah 19 27 Charles Mason
Eric Blair 18 24 Jermaine Turner
David Cunningham 18 10 Jose Supervia
Tolka Rovers 80 (41)   95 (46) St Paul’s
Jay Fazandes 21 45 Douglas Hines
Randal Mounts 18 13 Jarleth Lee
Javier Jimenee 11 12 Jason Fleming
Tolka Rovers gifted St Paul’s victory with four of their players, Paddy Boylan, Mike Quill, Randal Mounts and Javier Jimenee all leaving the game with five fouls. There was little between the teams for most of the game, and it was pretty much basket for basket until the third quarter when Killarney pulled ahead into double figures. Tolka fought back and reduced the gap, but couldn’t maintain it. Killarney clinched a comfortable victory in the final quarter with new signing Hines getting the top score of the weekend with 45pts.
Star of the Sea 102

(58)

  83 (48) Hibernian UCD Marian
Kenny McFarland 27 29 Neville Charles
Gabe Jackson 23
Trevor Smullen 17
Trevor Smullen made his debut for Star of the Sea after a late transfer on Friday from nearby neighbours Dungannon. Star were on top for most of the game, with Kenny McFarland also impressing in his debut. Neville Charles continued to show the form he enjoyed at the end of last season, with an excellent performance that saw him hit 29pts and keep Marian in the game. But the rest of the Marian team failed to gel, and Star built up a 10pt lead going into the third quarter.

Star began to lose their way in the third quarter, with a lapse of concentration producing some sloppy passing and turnovers. They allowed Marian sneak back into the game, with scores from Edge and Charles putting the visitors 2pts in front.

But the home side got their act in order in the final quarter and pulled away to win with ease and get their first points of the new season.

Neptune 143

(70)

  70(33) Clare Jets
Charron Watson 34 27 Darren Edge
Brian Finlay 25 15 Lester Hunt
Gordon Fitzgerald 24
Title holders Neptune showed that they have what it takes to claim their second consecutive league title with a rousing 143 thrashing of Clare Jets last night. No Ricardo or Rasuel, but Neptune certainly didn’t seem to miss them as they stormed passed a lack lustre Jets team.

Charron Watson showed he has what it takes to become one of the leading stars of league with an outstanding performance, which saw him top score on 34pts. A small forward, his speed and pace will make him hard to contain while Vince Daly and Niall O’Reilly stepped up inside.

Clare Jets were without their listed coach Carlos Paiva, who is believed to have moved to Limerick and have no more involvement with the club, and they never looked like being a threat to Neptune. The league leaders were 110 – 50 in front going into the final quarter, and the final result may well a record league win.

BurgerKing Limerick 92(49)   100

(47)

Thorn Killester
Tliotus Brown 40 30 John Leahy
Rock Winston 24 20 Eric Jackson
Tom Walsh 24 18 Adrian Fulton
Limerick’s new American signing Tliotus Brown certainly set the boards alight last night at the new University Arena. Hitting 40pts on his debut, he proved a thorn in Killester’s side for most of the game, alongside Rock Winston, who was a late signing for Limerick on Friday – he returns for his second season with the club. There was little between the teams for most of the first half – a high scoring affair, and it was Brown’s work inside that gave the home team a 2pt lead going in at the break.

Killester’s new trio of Leahy, Fulton and Jackson worked well together and kept the visitors in touch and they finally pulled away by 10pts midway through the third quarter.

Limerick pulled back in front through Brown and Winston, but Leahy put the visitors in front again to set the scene for a dramatic final quarter. Eric Jackson took Brown out of the game in the fourth quarter as Killester pulled in front and going into the last three minutes, they held a 6pt lead – and ran out comfortable winners in the end.

Star of the Sea 65(34)   89(43) Big Al’s Notre Dame
Gabe Jackson 27 35 Brandon Hughes
Kenny McFarland 18 18 Anthony Jenkins

Brandon Hughes had a dream debut for Big Al’s Notre Dame and proved a nightmare for Star of the Sea as Notre Dame overcame their old rivals by 24pts away from home.

Star of the Sea showed the effects of playing their second game in less than 24hours and were lethargic from tip-off, with only Gabe Jackson showing any real form.

Not so Hughes who played havoc with Star’s defence from the opening minute. He repeatedly waltzed past the usually tenacious Scott Summersgill – taking the ball to the hoop or dumping the ball off to Jenkins and Nuno inside.

Hughes is a natural point guard whose distribution of the ball and fast break game was spot on, and despite being just 6’0" he topped scored on 35pts. He scored at least 8 baskets through back door passes from Jenkins and if he continues this form

O’Hagan Saints 94 (50)   85 (41) Abbey Foods Sligo
Stephen McGuirk 27 42 Rick Ebong
Pierre Shuttlesworth 20 17 Chad Holmes
Maurice Carter 24 8 Mal Daly
The first quarter was even as both teams settled into their first game of the season. During the second quarter O’Hagan Saints pulled away through Irish star Stephen McGuirk to build up an 11pt lead, Ebong pulling one back for Sligo to reduce the home sides lead to 9 going in at the break. The Saints had a very strong third quarter and they led 74-59 going into the final 10 minutes. Sligo reduced the gap to 3pts during the final quarter but the lead was stretched again to give the Saints a 9pt victory. Sligo’s Rick Ebong, outclassed the Saints in scores but McGuirk had a good offensive game to match the American.

Mark Keenan got injured in the second quarter and didn’t play for the remainder of the game.

ESB Women’s League

Bausch & Lomb Wildcats 57(22)   43(25) Sasha Meteors
Jillian Hayes 23 18 Karen Hennessy 18
Orla Dempsey 10 9 Neassa O’Keeffe
Kim Fitzpatrick 8 5 Sinead Harvey
The opening game of the ESB Women’s league between old rivals Wildcats and Meteors proved a scrappy affair full of mistakes on both sides, as the two teams got used to being back in competitive action.

There was little between the sides in the first half, with good offensive work from Karen Hennessy just shading it for the visitors at the break.

But in the second half it was Wildcats experience that proved the difference as they pulled away to run up an 8 pts lead which they were never to lose.

In the end, the experienced trio of Hayes, Kiely and Olivia O’Reilly put in a strong team performance, which secured the win for the home side.

Meteors showed a lot of promise, with Neassa O’Keeffe in particular impressing on her debut, and Karen Hennessy again proving the central player for Meteors. Wildcats may have come out on top in this encounter, but Meteors will be gunning for revenge when they next meet.
