Neptune need OT to take Cork derby

ESB Men’s League Results

Neptune (91) 82 (45)   (89) 82 (50) Esat Business Demons
S McCarthy 33 23 B Clernon
A Meyers 19 23 T Carberre
R McKune 18 14 J Wiley
Rasuel McKune, last years Player of the Year, made his comeback for a sensational derby in Cork City. McKune replaced an injured Charron Watson for the weekend.

Esat Business Demons took the tip off and Tobe Carberre slam dunked to put the crowd in Neptune stadium on their feet. Stephen McCarthy retaliated immediately with a long three pointer. That was to be the height of Neptune’s glory for the first quarter, with Andy Meyers missing two free throws, the defending champions looked defeated. Demons took the first quarter 34-22. Throughout the second quarter Neptune battled hard to bring the game back and went into half time trailing by a mere 5pts.

Demons came back in the third quarter and looked to have victory sealed. The third quarter finished 70–57 in Demons favour and it looked like it was all over for Neptune.

The final quarter saw Neptune storm back into the game, with Stephen McCarthy giving it everything and being justly rewarded the MVP. Tobe Carberre fouled out half way through the last quarter and was a notable loss to Demons. Juan Wiley fouled out shortly after. Neptune kept Demons to twelve points in the final quarter and the Cork teams went into extra time.

Neptune took the lead in the first moments of extra time and were to retain it for a sizzling victory. With 6.4 seconds left on the clock, a foul by Rasuel McKune had him fouled out and Brian Clernon was on the line. Clernon had no luck with the first one and hit the second. Another foul by Neptune sent Dave Lehane to the line with only seconds on the clock and 2 points separating the sides. Under pressure, Lehane devastatingly missed both baskets. A final chance came to Demons with two seconds on the clock, when Mark Kennedy was on his own on the inside and looked to tie break. Unbelievably, Kennedy missed an open layup and the buzzer went to the delight of the Neptune fans.

Hibernian UCD Marian 87 (49)   74 (45) Thorn Killester
Kevin Ward 32 29 Eric Jackson
Chris Akers 18 20 John Leahy
Neville Charles/ Patrick Glover 11
Thorn Killester grabbed the first basket of the game to give them their only lead throughout the four quarters. Marian went on to take a number of unanswered scores, to take a 9-2 lead. This was how the game was to continue. The first quarter finished 23-15 in Marian’s favour.

Throughout the first three quarters Marian’s lead varied between 6 and as much as 14 points. Killester fought back on many occasions to bring victory back within reach, but were always playing catch-up.

Marian entered the final quarter with an 8 point lead and then blew open the game to establish an 18-point lead. Marian were in control throughout the game and cruised to full time with a 13-point victory.

Kevin Ward was outstanding for UCD Marian with 32 points. He shot 15 form 21 field goals and added 13 rebounds.

Marian certainly deserved this victory and dominated Killester throughout. Neville Charles and Gary Edge were outstanding in their defence of John Leahy and he was only allowed one 3-point attempt in the whole game - which he missed. He failed to score in the 4th quarter.

Killester only made 1 from 18 3 pointers in contrast to Marian's 6 from 10. Marian's great defence certainly sealed this victory.

Both teams missed a number of shots throughout the game, which prevented either side stretching a significant lead. Limerick returned after half time with a two-point lead and in the third quarter stretched their lead 69-61. The Saints put on a good run and with a few fast breaks brought the teams level again. Donald Edge and Stephen McGuirk did a superb job defending the boards for Vincents.

With 17 seconds to go, the teams were level, 84-84 with the Saints holding possession. Mark Keenan put the ball away for the Saints to put them ahead 86-84. Limerick called a time-out and with 2 seconds remaining, Limerick were unable to bring the game into extra time and victory was to belong to the Saint’s on this occasion.
