C Doyal 19 12 D Kavanagh
After three defeats in the live TG4 games, O’Hagan Saints managed to break the sequence by defeating Waterford Crystal 100-91 on Saturday. St Vincent’s played better then they have been doing in recent weeks, but slipped up toward the end to allow Waterford Crystal to narrow a secure lead. Stephen McGuirk was the difference that helped Saints to this victory and sent Waterford home, further down the league table.

The Saints took an early lead, leaving Waterford trailing 6-0 after the first few minutes. Lester Hunt and Eric Blair brought the visitors back and the remainder of the quarter was basket for basket. Stephen McGuirk was on form from tip off and helped the Saints 26-21 first quarter lead.

O’Hagan Saints went on to extend their lead in the second quarter, keeping Crystal out of the game for much of the time. With three minutes on the clock, Saints had increased their lead to fourteen, when Kavanagh was fouled and scored one from two, Waterford’s first score in 2mins 20secs. Satins went on to maintain their lead and went into half-time leading 51-37.

Saints came back into the third quarter blazing and ran away with a 16 point lead with 2.23mins on the clock. At this point Waterford Crystal upped their defence and kept the Dublin side to 1 point for the remainder of the game. Robert Grant featured greatly for Waterford in this third quarter to put them back in the game, but trailing 65-73 going into the final period.

The final quarter was nip and tuck, with Waterford bringing the game within 7points at one stage, but it was the closest they were to come, despite combined efforts by Lester Hunt and Eric Blair. An intentional foul by Mike Norris with 6.8 seconds remaining sent Shuttlesworth to the line, to score one from two to finish the game 100-91 to the O’Hagan Saints.

Big Al’s Notre Dame 81 (45) 71 (36) Hibernian UCD Marian
T McDonagh 19 21 K Ward
B Hughes 18 14 C Akers
A Jenkins 18 14 P Glover
Marian opened up an 8-2 lead with 3 minutes gone in the first quarter, Ward and Akers sharing the points. They held Big Al’s to just 3pts for the first five minutes, as their tight defence paid dividends, Big Al’s just could find no openings for an easy shot. Brandon Hughes then began to cause Marian problems, he got Big Al’s first basket in four minutes and set up McEvilly for a reverse hook that cut Marian’s lead to 5pts.

Gary Edge picked up his third foul with 2.42 to go in the quarter, Hughes got the basket and the bonus to make it a 1pt game and then gave Big Al’s their first lead of the game seconds later with an full court lay-up. The action was basket to basket for the last two minutes, Alan Fearon scoring a big three-pointer for Marian just before the buzzer to put the visitors 21-18 in front and the end of the quarter.

Neville Charles had come in for Marian at the end of the first quarter, and he grabbed some big rebounds for the side, but despite his work inside, Big Al’s pulled away to lead 27-21 with 7 minutes left in the half, thanks to buckets from McDonagh and Lennie. Kevin Meany hit a three pointer to bring Marian back in touch, and Pat Glover made it a 1pt game seconds later again, with a superb jump shot just inside the line.

Then Jenks hit two three’s in quick succession, to put the home team 37-28 in front with 4 minutes to go. Big Al’s were on top, and only Pat Glover kept Marian in the touch, but Big Al’s still enjoyed a 46-37 lead at the break.

Hughes proved to be the major thorn in Marian’s side in this quarter – he made 5pts, but created so many of their other baskets – and was particularly effective with Tony McDonagh – and was involved in all 7 of the points McDonagh had in this quarter.

Things really hotted up in the fourth quarter, Marian cut their half time deficit to just 4pts, Big Al’s led 61-57. Hughes again proved the man – setting up McDonagh for yet another back door move and scoring himself seconds later to extend Big Al’s lead to 8pts with 7.46 on the clock. Alan Fearon left the game with five fouls, then Kevin Ward made it a 6pt game, with a big slam dunk after a long pass from Edge.

Big Al’s still looked in control, and Albert Carrigan scored four consecutive points – 2 from the line to put the home side 69-61 in front with 6.09 to go.

Both sides missed clear chances to score in the next few offense’s. Kevin Ward eventually put Marian back in touch, scoring on his third attempt and drawing the bonus – but he failed to make the resulting free throw. He was back on the line seconds later, this time making the 3-point play to cut Big Al’s lead to 3pts, 69-65 with 4.37 on the clock. Big Al’s lost possession with a 24second violation, but Gary Edge gave possession back with a 3pt attempt that fell short. No such problems for Jenks at the other end as he coolly slot home a big three to put his side 72-65 in front. Hughes was again Big Al’s hero as he skipped past Glover to slot home his 18th point of the game, and set up McDonagh yet again seconds later to make it 78-70 with 1 minute on the clock. Pat Glover missed at the other end for Marian, Akers grabbed the rebound, but couldn’t find the spot and Jenks grabbed the rebound to set up Lennie for a basket at the other end and it was effectively game over.

Thorn Killester 90 (41) 78 (34) Tyrone Towers
J Leahy 24 34 J Turner
E Jackson 18 15 C Mason
J Quigley 16 13 S McGeogh
Playing without the injured Jerome Westbrooks and with Eric Jackson and Ed Randolf not fully fit Killester played a ten-man panel to claim a comfortable 90-78 victory over a gallant Tyrone Towers. Thorn stretched an 11-2 lead in the opening minutes, but excellent shooting and amazing dunks from Charles Mason and Jermaine Turner kept the Northerners in the game and they trailed 41-34 at half time.

Killester jumped into a 26 point lead in the second half with Leahy on fire hitting six 3-pointers in a row, ably assisted by Damien Sealy’s 15 points. Ingle finished the game with his five young Irish players on court for the last 6 minutes.

Gleneagle Killarney 76 (34) 82 (36) 24 Connect Star of the Sea
M Carter 26 25 K McFarland
S Horgan  11 16 G Jackson
T Smith 10 15 G McGuire
Despite Gleneagle Killarney coming close to victory for this home game, Star of the Sea remained in control throughout, leading after each quarter. Terry Smith made his debut for Killarney, having lost William Maysfield to a Portuguese club during the week.

Killarney’s Dave Griffin picked up four fouls in the first 6.30 minutes of the game, restricting Killarney’s performance by having to sit out for much of the game. Star led after the first quarter 24-17.

Jarleth Lee came off the bench in the second quarter and brought Killarney back into the game reducing the Kerry deficit to two points going into half time. Kenny McFarland and Gabe Jackson were prominent in this second quarter and kept Star of the Sea in control.

Killarney fought back in the third quarter and James Fleming gave them the lead for the first time after three minutes 43-42. However Star remained in contention and with a minute remaining in the third quarter the sides were equal. A three-pointer by Scott Summersgill put Star out in front and Killarney were to remain scoreless for the remainder of the quarter. Star had a 6 point lead going into the final period, 60-54.

Sean O’Connor and Terry Smith helped Killarney stay in touch for the first half of the last quarter, however with 5.50 on the clock, Star broke away. Killarney were unable to sustain the final minutes and panicked giving Star victory on this occasion. With 50 seconds on the clock, Star led 76-74, and a foul by Summersgill had Dave Griffin on the line. Under pressure Griffin made neither basket. Seconds later a foul on McFarland had him on the line and he made both to give Star a 78-74 lead. Killarney were unable to score and Star took the last rebound to allow Summersgill take the final basket to give Star an 80-74 victory.

Big Al’s Notre Dame 89 (46) 76 (31) Burger King Limerick
A Jenkins 24 27 BJ McFarland
B Hughes 22 14 J Kilroy
T McDonagh 11 9 R Lynch
Big Al’s came off the back of a good win over UCD Marian on Saturday night to record an emphatic 89-76 win over Burger King Limerick in the National Basketball arena.

In the opening quarter Big Al’s were impressive in their movement and execution on the defensive end to score 29 points. They were resolute and determined on the defensive and restricted Limerick to just 13.

Limerick settled in the second quarter with BJ McFarland inspiring the team with 10 points. However they were unable to eat into the Big Al’s lead, with Jenkins controlling matters with good support from Tony McDonagh and Albert Corrigan.

The third quarter continued in the same reign. Joe Kilroy began to hit form for Limerick but Big Al’s were getting something from all their Irish players, with Kenny and McEvilly particularly impressive. The Dublin side led 67-48 going into the final quarter.

Limerick were unable to get any rhythm going throughout and this continued into the final quarter, while Jenks used the cushion of a 20 point lead to get all his bench players into the game. In the end Big Al’s ran out comfortable winners by 89 points to 76.

Frosties Tigers 100 (52) 68 (30) 24 Connect Star of the Sea
R Leonard 32 24 G Jackson
J Teahan 21 14 K McFarland
R Turner 18 9 G Maguire
Star of the Sea were never going to come out of this one winners, having struggled to defeat Killarney the day before. Star travelled with only seven players so this blow out by Tigers was to be expected.

The first quarter started basket for basket with Tralee taking the lead to win the first quarter 20-17. The second quarter saw Tralee stretch that lead and put an end to any chances of a victory for the Northern visitors. Tralee went into half time with a 22 point lead, having outscored Star 32-13 in the second quarter. At this point Star were visibly tired and the game was essentially over.

Gabe Jackson picked up an eye injury in the third quarter which had him sit out the last quarter, only to allow Tigers increase their lead further.

G Winders 24 27 M Carter
C Doyal 21 23 T Smith
S McGuirk 18 16 D Griffin
Vincent’s were in control from the very beginning, but were unable to shake off the home side until the third quarter. The first quarter finished 27-20 to the Saints, but the second quarter saw Killarney come back after a few short breaks, to bring the game to three points, 47-44. Stephen McGuirk had a tremendous first half scoring his 18 points in that time.

The third quarter was the turning point for O’Hagan Saints, with Gareth Winders recording six 3-pointers. The Dublin side blew Killarney out of the game and were in complete control from here on out. Saints led at the end of the third quarter and 83-63 and played the bench for the remainder.
