Sealy seals Irish win

Irish Player of the Year Damien Sealy scored right on the full time buzzer to give Ireland a 70-68 win over Finland in their crucial European Championships qualifying game at the National Basketball Arena on Wednesday night, a first ever home win in a senior men's European game for the hosts.

Ireland fought back from a 35-38 first half deficit to take a 7pt lead in the final quarter, but the white-hot shooting of Finland's Teemu Rannikko saw the game tied at 68 apiece with 7 seconds remaining and over-time looked to be on the cards.

But the Killester player held his cool and allowed the clock to run down to just 1 second before he took the last shot of the game, to give Ireland the valuable win.

Ireland now play Iceland in the National Basketball Arena on Saturday (7.30pm) in their final clash of this first stage of the European Championship qualifying round.

Billy Donlon was Ireland's top scorer with 16 first half points with Tim Kennedy adding 14.

Rannikko hit a game-high 19 for the Finns.
