Irish finish fifth

Ireland’s first European Championship semi-final round campaign concluded in Sarajevo on Saturday night in a disappointing 94-77 defeat to Bosnia.

Only Ireland could have prevented the Bosnians making it to Sweden in September for the finals, but a superb first half performance from Mujevezinovic left Ireland trailing 31-14
at the end of the first period.

In what was the international swansong for stalwarts Damien Sealy and Adrian Fulton, Ireland struggled throughout the second quarter while Bosnia earned a 26-point cushion, leading 57-31 at half time.  Ireland upped their defence in the second half and put on a superb performance to win both third and fourth quarters.

Despite another excellent 22-point performance from Cal
Bowdler and superb play by Jay Larranaga, Glenn Sekunda and Marty Conlon, the Bosnian outfit held onto their first half lead long enough to secure the important victory.

The Irish finish with a creditable 3-7 record, fifth in Group C.

Germany ensured first place by beating runners-up Croatia 81-73 while Cyprus ended with the wooden spoon after their 83-65 loss in Macedonia.
