National
Cup, 1st round
Plymouth Raiders
71 (20,33,55) (Cue 15, Beasley 12, Williams/Love 9)
Thames Valley
Tigers 113 (32,62,85) (Meldrum 22, Bowman 21, E. Williams 20)
Thames Valley Tigers
secured a relatively easy progress into the last eight of the National
Cup, shaking off Plymouth Raiders for a 113-71 victory at the Pavilions.
The Bracknell outfit
broke clear early and never looked back, despite an injury to Barry Bowman
which saw the American limp off in the third quarter.
The visitors' high
scoring display was maintained throughout the game - they led by 12 points
at the end of the first quarter at 32-20 and extended that advantage to
29 points at half-time with a 62-33 lead.
Another 23 points
in the third quarter, plus a 28-point final period was enough to secure
a comfortable success for Paul James' men.
Tigers will again
face NBL opposition in the quarter-finals next month in the shape of Teesside
but James is confident in his new look side.
"I think the team
has a different mentality this year," he added. "We have a lot of
young players, who have really been adapting quickly and they have really
been carrying the team. Some of the more established players are not quite
firing on all cylinders yet, so when they are we should have a really good
team.
"I said to the players
on Thursday and Friday last week that if we played hard we had an opportunity
to get something out of the weekend and that's what we did. We certainly
did play hard and I was pleased with the results we got."
Greg Meldrum was
the game's leading scorer with 22 personal points for the BBL outfit, while
Cue added 15 for the home side.
