Plymouth shock but Rhondda, same old story
Men's National Cup Final
Plymouth Raiders 89 (29, 46, 66) Beasley 21; Williams 20; Love 17
Teesside Mohawks 82 (24, 43, 59) Harrison 25; Miller 14; Tresvant 14
Plymouth Raiders ended Teesside's monopoly on the English trophy cabinet by lifting their first-ever National Cup in an intense final in Sheffield, holding off a late Mohawks challenge to win 89-82.
Gary Stronach's side led virtually from start to finish and were inspired by a MVP performance from American DeAntoine Beasley who fired 21 points.
Although Teesside trailed by seven entering the final period, they keep plugging away but it was the Raiders who finished strongest.
Women's National Cup Final
Rhondda Rebels 65 (13, 29, 50) Lender 17, Boston 16, Compain 15
Nottingham Wildcats 48 (13, 25, 37) Sarjant 14, Scarberry / Naylor 12Rhondda Rebels retained the National Cup, gaining their fourth Final victory in five years, but required a fourth quarter surge to see off a dogged Nottingham 65-48 at the EIS.
And as so often in recent years, Missy Lender keys the Welsh side's success with a game-high 17 points and 21 rebounds.
Trailing only 29-25 at half-time, underdogs Nottingham's hopes of an upset evaporated in the third quarter as a three pointer from ex-WNBAer Meg Compain gave the Rebels a 13 point cushion.
And although the Wildcats closed to 52-44 with six minutes left, a late 8-2 for Rhondda secured the silverware for Steve Williams' side.
