Betts on as England stun Slovenia

Written off, derided as no-hopers, England bounced back from a one-sided loss to Italy in mid-week, stunning Slovenia 73-70 at the Coventry Skydome get their quest to reach the 2003 European Championship finals off the mark.

The inexperienced English side upset the odds and nudged ahead when Andy Betts - who collected 13 points and as many rebounds in 40 minutes on court - scored in the final minute for a 71-70 lead.

Steve Hansell and Tony Dorsey added a free throw apiece as England finished off the side which reached the quarter-finals at last summer's Eurobasket in Turkey.

The buoyant English next travel to meet group outsiders Czech Republic on Wednesday.
