Portugese too hot for England

Portugal's superior three-point shooting dented England's hopes of reaching the European Championship finals on Saturday afternoon. Playing in the Azores, the Portuguese won for the first time in five games in this semi-final round, beating England 74-70 to leave Laszlo Nemeth's men with an uphill battle to reach Sweden 2003 when competition resumes later in the year.

The sides were evenly matched for most of the contest with the guests edging one point ahead after the first quarter before Portugal took a 37-35 lead into the second half. Level at 54-54 entering the final period, it was the hosts who scraped though.

Andy Betts led the hosts with 18 with Tony Dorsey adding 16 and Steve Hansell 15.

Elsewhere in the group, Italy inflicted a first loss on Russia, winning 8666, while Czech Republic took a 7170 victory over Slovenia.
