Scantlebury takes England job

Peter Scantlebury has been appointed as the new England Senior Men's head coach, taking over on a part-time basis the position left vacant by the dismissal of Laszlo Nemeth.

In 1999, Scantlebury was selected as Assistant Coach to Nemeth for England's Senior Men, thirteen years after making his debut as a player against Turkey.  He continued this player/assistant coach role up until January of 2002, when the England Men last competed.

The current Sheffield Sharks coach has put his name to some of England's greatest basketball achievements as both a National Team and National League player.  He
made his England Senior playing debut in 1986 against Turkey and went on to gain a record 131 caps and score 1069 points in his international career.

As a National League player, Scantlebury holds numerous records including the top all-time point scorer.  In the summer of 2002, his basketball accomplishments were honoured when he was awared an MBE and he is now training his sights on qualification for the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

"I'm very excited about this opportunity", says Scantlebury.  "It's a new challenge for me in my basketball career and I'll do everything I can to make the best of it.

"At the minute, I'm just looking forward to getting started.  We have a long road to Melbourne - as soon as we can get the ball rolling, the better."

"As a player, this was a position I had hoped to be in for many years. My basketball career is going in the direction I always hoped it would."
