Hackney old boys gather for White
Many former team mates, friends and colleagues of Hackney supremo Joe White will be getting together in his honour for a testimonial game on Saturday 7th June, 2002 at Space Leisure Centre in London.
White, who is currently undergoing treatment for cancer, is one of the legends of English Basketball. Not only does he still hold the record for being the youngest player ever to play in the top division of Men’s Basketball (he was just 14 when he made his debut for Crystal Palace), but he has also developed a reputation second to none for his coaching methods to develop young players.
Based in Hackney, Joe has worked miracles with young players from areas where there are many distractions, and has given them something positive to focus their energies on. From this foundation, Joe has built a club that now offers opportunities across a range of age groups including the club's NBL Conference side Inter-Basket.
However he stepped down from his duties for the latter half of the last season to obtain treatment.
"He has his good days and bad days," confirmed Hackey's Stehen Pearl. Many top players who have graced English Basketball are pulling their boots on to support Joe White. Among the players who will be displaying their skills are the Scantlebury brothers, Peter and Richard, the Baker twins Ronnie and Stedroy, the new Chairman of the BBL, Vince Razak, Alan Cunningham (who still hasn’t retired!), former GB internationals Colin Irish and Joel Moore, former “Tower” Darryl Reeshaw, Nigerian international Solomon Ayinla, plus Rodney Alexander, Andrew Bailey, Jody John, Sam Stiller, Errol Seaman, Rob Harper, Michael Hayles, Junior Taylor, and current National Development Manager, Steve Nelson.
