Hackney's White loses cancer fight

Long-time Hackney coach Joe White died of cancer on Sunday afternoon after a long battle against cancer.

White, who had been credited with developing the careers of a multitude of young players from London and elsewhere, had briefly returned to working with his basketball club after fighting against illness but his condition deteriorated in recent weeks.

"He battled his illness with the courage and  determination that he did with everything in his life," said Hackney's Steve Pearl in a statement announcing the sad news.

"I am sure everyone thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time."

White was one of the legends of English Basketball in a career which saw him four England caps.

White began his playing career for Embassy Milton Keynes in 1977-78 when he collected runners-up medals in the League and Championship Cup.

Under the guidance of Danny Palmer, he joined Crystal Palace in the early '80s, winning the league in 1982/3 and finishing runner-up the following season. It was whilst with Palace that he earned international recognition with four England caps.

He moved with Palmer to Portsmouth where he claimed his second league winner's medal in 1986-87.

White played for and coached the London Towers in the early '90s and became an integral part of the club's successful junior development programme working along side now Birmingham Bullets coach Tony Garbelotto, overseeing a programme that won 18 National titles at all age groups from under-13 to under-23.

He coached London Towers in the BBL in the 1992-93 season before returning to his playing career and then on to a phenomenally successful development role.

Subsequently at Hommerton House School in Hackney, White created a dynasty of successful teams at schools levels.

Over the last eight years, Hommerton have won 11 National titles at under-14, under-15 and under-16 levels under the guidance of White who continued to oversee the area's senior side until late in his illness.

Joe's funeral will take place on 19th December, 10am at St. John of Jerusalem, Lauriston Road, London E9
