Burke sticks with Eire despite Suns deal

Officials have claimed Pat Burke will play for Ireland in the forthcoming European Championships qualifiers, even though he has signed for the Phoenix Suns on
a two-year deal.

The Dubliner, the only native-born Irishman ever to play in the NBA, spent last year with Real Madrid but had a previous one season Stateside stint with the Orlando Magic three years ago.

However, he has committed to play for the national team ahead of the Suns training camp including the tie at the National Basketball Arena on September 3 against Malta.

The Irish side returned home yesterday from a five day training camp in Long Branch, New Jersey and coach Gerry Fitzpatrick announced his squad upon their arrival.

Ireland's U16 Women have just returned home from Estonia after finishing in the top tier in 8th position out of 16. The Under 18 men ended their European Championships in the Slovak Republic in 16th place.

The U20 men put in some brilliant performances and exceeded all expectations by finishing their European Championships in 10th place, having lost out to Portugal in the final playoff game.
