St. Mirren McDonald's have capped their meteoric three year rise from drawing board to the summit of the Scottish game after being crowned as league champions for the first time.
The Paisley outfit, under coach Lindsay Lang, held their nerve to depose reigning kings Glasgow d2 68-66 at a packed Linwood on Friday night, ensuring the title would be theirs with one match remaining.
After being level at 27-27 at half-time, Saints clinched the match in dramatic fashion with former Glasgow star Graeme Lumsden scoring the decisive basket with just two seconds remaining. As coach Lindsay Lang remarked, the script could not have been better.
"I was dreading it going into overtime so we went for it and it is without doubt our finest hour. My players deserve every accolade. We know we're the best team in the country but you still have to go out and prove it."
Alistair Rae led the victors with 21 points while Craig Brownlie hit 22 for Glasgow, who must now seek consolation in the Scottish Cup final at the Kelvin Hall on Sunday April 9.
