South take 1999 All-Star Game

Edinburgh Rocks Ted Berry dunked, passed and sparkled his way to the Most Valuable Player Award at last night’s Dairylea Dunkers All-Star Game at Newcastle Arena, his performance the most outstanding among the very best players in the British game. The annual gathering of the premier two dozen performers in the Budweiser League is always a high scoring affair and the 1999 contest was no exception, the South gaining a 158-156 win over the North,

Defense is effectively disallowed in this game and with 70 points in the first quarter alone, this was never going to lack entertainment. A 4000 sellout crowd cheered every alley oop and a vocal support from north of the border was heard above the noise chanting the name of their hometown hero.

The North trailed 75-88 at half time and came back strongly at the end Berry almost won the game for his squad at the very end, his final second toss from under his own basket managing to find the rim at the other end before bouncing away, leaving the little American with a game best 29 points.

"The crowd wants a show, they want some dunks and we give them what they want to see," said Berry. "This game isn’t based on defense and I went there to entertain."

Malcolm Leak of Towers and Thames valley's Jason Siemon led the South on 24 points apiece and their side now lead the all-time series 6-5.
